While the vast majority of his countrymen dream of achieving success at one of Uruguay’s traditional big-name clubs as a springboard to European football, Lugano chose a different path. In April 2003, at the age of just 22 and with only a handful of first-team games for Montevideo’s Nacional behind him, Lugano accepted an offer from Sao Paulo FC, packed his bags and headed to Brazil. Three years on Lugano remains in Sao Paulo, having forged a reputation as one of the key figures in a side that has shown an unquenchable thirst for glory. Despite having been the subject of interest from a number of the biggest names in European football over the last year, the gifted defender has stayed loyal to the team where he has won the Brazilian State Championship, the Copa Libertadores, and the FIFA Club World Championship. FIFA.com: What did you make of the first leg?Diego Lugano: Basically I think that things just didn’t go our way. For example, first Mineiro got injured, although he bravely continued playing. Then another of our key midfielders, Josue, was sent off. Then Danilo’s shoulder started playing up again… The first half hadn’t even finished and our midfield was in tatters! Despite everything, we had chances to equalise. It’s true that we could have used a bit more luck, but you have to make your own luck and we didn’t really help ourselves. What do mean exactly?There was a 10 or 15-minute spell when they took advantage of the gaps left in the centre of the park, especially when it was ten against ten. We left ourselves far too exposed and they outnumbered us on several counter-attacks. That’s where their goals came from and we should not have allowed it to happen. On the other side of the coin, when we headed into the dressing room after the game we all said that Edcarlos’ goal was vital, and could help us turn the tie around. How will Sao Paulo approach the return match?In the same way that we’ve been playing all our matches away from the Morumbi thus far - keeping things steady and using our experience and intelligence to control proceedings. The key will be to knock Inter out of their stride and ’frustrate’ their fans. They will be highly motivated given what’s at stake and they are very strong on home turf, but you mustn’t forget that a simple result will take us into extra-time. Nothing was settled in the first leg: they won the battle but the war is not over yet. We’re capable of going to the Beira-Rio and bringing home the title. That is as may be, but you have not won there since 2004… Moreover, Inter boast a six-match unbeaten run against Sao Paulo. How do you explain that?That’s easy. We played a lot of those games with a second-string side. Whatever the reasons, I’m not going to delve too deeply. The only game we should be taking into account is last week’s match, and they beat us fair and square at the Morumbi. But I repeat: we are certain that we can turn things around. How do you think the team will deal with playing the second leg away from home, a situation that you have not faced thus far.But that’s just in this year’s Copa. Last year we eliminated both Mexican side Tigres and Argentina’s River Plate as the away side. It’s true that in those ties we had already won the first leg, but we need to see this as a fresh challenge with even more at stake. Bringing back the title would be a historic achievement. What would that mean to you?Both for me personally and the club as a whole it would mean that one year on (from Japan 2005) we’re still at the very top of the international game.
